Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple number that gives you a quick snapshot of whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. It's the first thing most doctors check, and it takes just two inputs — your height and weight — to calculate.
Calczia's BMI Calculator gives you your BMI instantly and tells you which category you fall into, using both the standard WHO ranges and the adjusted ranges recommended for Asian and Indian populations.
What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?
BMI Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.70 m tall: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2 — which falls in the Normal/Healthy range.
BMI Categories for Indians
Standard WHO BMI ranges were developed based on Western populations. Research shows that Indians and South Asians carry higher metabolic risk at lower BMI values. Adjusted ranges for Indians:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 – 22.9: Normal weight (WHO: up to 24.9)
- 23.0 – 24.9: Overweight — increased risk for Indians
- 25.0 – 29.9: Obese Class I
- 30 and above: Obese Class II
This distinction matters. An Indian with a BMI of 23.5 might be told they're 'normal' by a standard calculator, but by Indian guidelines they're in the 'overweight' zone with increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.
BMI Limitations — What It Doesn't Tell You
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. A bodybuilder with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but very low body fat. Similarly, someone with 'normal' BMI may carry too much fat around the abdomen — which is particularly risky for Indians (central obesity). Use BMI as a starting point, not the final word.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the healthy BMI range for Indians?
For Indians, a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is considered healthy. A BMI between 23–24.9 indicates increased risk, and above 25 is considered obese by Indian guidelines.
How do I calculate BMI in kg and cm?
BMI = Weight in kg ÷ (Height in metres)². Convert cm to metres first (divide by 100). Example: 70 kg, 165 cm → BMI = 70 ÷ (1.65 × 1.65) = 25.7.
Is BMI accurate for Indians?
Standard BMI is less accurate for Indians because South Asians tend to have higher body fat percentage at lower BMI values. Indian-specific cutoffs (overweight at 23+) are recommended.
